 The subjunctive

 

 

The subjunctive (or the use of infinitive verbs without “to”) is used to emphasize urgency

or importance. It’s used after certain verbs, certain expressions and in informal, impersonal English.

In more informal language, “should” is used especially after the verbs “suggest”, “recommend”

and “insist”.

             Example: The teacher insisted that he stop making noise.

 >Verbs followed by the subjunctive: to commend, to demand, to insist, to propose,

to recommend, to suggest.

>Expressions followed by the subjunctive:

              It’s best (that)

              It’s crucial (that)

              It’s desirable (that)

              It’s essential (that)

              It’s imperative (that)

              It’s important (that)

              It’s recommended (that)

              It’s urgent (that)

              It’s vital (that)

              It’s a good idea (that)

              It’s a bad idea (that)
